Population Connection Action Fund Applauds President Joe Biden for Repealing the Global Gag Rule

For immediate release: January 28, 2021

We are pleased and grateful that President Biden acted today to eliminate the disgraceful Global Gag Rule and take other steps to expand and promote reproductive health and rights around the world.

With the Global Gag Rule lifted, communities in countries from Guatemala to Kenya to Nepal will be one step closer to getting the reproductive health care they deserve. Access to these services is crucial to a person’s health, autonomy, and economic security. And investments in reproductive health and family planning are essential to building a safer, healthier world for all of us.

We cannot stop here, however. In order to ensure no future president is able to reinstate the deadly Global Gag Rule, the 117th Congress must pass the Global Health, Empowerment, and Rights (HER) Act—a bipartisan, bicameral bill which would permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule. It would provide stability to health care agencies and, more importantly, the people around the world who rely on them.

Today begins the opportunity to chart bold, new progress on global reproductive health and rights. This is just the first step toward guaranteeing the most basic freedoms of reproductive health and bodily autonomy for people everywhere.
